Stridor

Stridor is the sound produced by the flow of air through the respiratory tract; it is a sign of obstruction.  It comes from either the larynx (the voice box) or the trachea (the windpipe).  The larynx is used for breathing, communication and as a protective valve to stop objects, including food and water, from entering the lungs.  Abnormalities of the larynx can obstruct airflow, alter phonation (speech) and make feeding difficult.  The most common cause of Stridor in an infant is Laryngomalacia.
